The Real Stories of Massachusetts
This is a history website — not a storefront, not a funnel. Just the stories.
Massachusetts is where America started arguing with itself — about freedom, about faith, about who gets to work and who gets to profit. From the Wampanoag homeland to the whaling docks of New Bedford, from Lowell's mill girls to the cod fishermen of Gloucester, this small state has carried an outsized share of the American story.
This site collects those stories through the photographs, paintings, and documents that witnessed them. Every image comes from a public archive — the Boston Public Library, the Library of Congress, Digital Commonwealth, and Wikimedia Commons — so the history stays free for everyone.
We're starting with the South Coast — New Bedford, Fall River, Cape Cod — and expanding across the Commonwealth: Plymouth, Boston, Salem, Lowell, the Berkshires, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and beyond.
Our books are written by Caleb Prescott, who digs through the archives so you don't have to — and finds the stories that didn't make the textbooks.
More regions, deeper timelines, oral histories, and the stories that didn't make the textbooks.
